What is Anal Fissure?

Anal fissure are small tears in the lining of the anus that can cause pain and bleeding during bowel movements. They can occur due to various factors, such as passing hard stools, chronic diarrhea, or anal intercourse. Fissure can be acute (lasting a few weeks) or chronic (lasting longer than six weeks) and often lead to discomfort and fear of bowel movements.

Hard Stools: Straining to pass hard stools is a common cause of fissure.

Chronic Diarrhea: Frequent loose stools can irritate the anal lining and lead to tears.

Childbirth: Women may experience fissure after vaginal delivery due to stretching of the anal area.

Anal Intercourse: This can lead to trauma and tearing of the anal lining.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Conditions like Crohn's disease can increase the risk of fissure.

Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning of the anal area can contribute to fissure development.

Pain: Sharp pain during and after bowel movements is a hallmark symptom.

Bleeding: Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the stool may occur.

Itching: Itching or irritation around the anus may be present.

Visible Tear: A visible crack or tear in the skin of the anal area.

Spasms: Painful muscle spasms in the anal sphincter may occur.

Anal fissure can often be treated with conservative measures such as dietary changes, increased fluid intake, and topical medications. In chronic cases, medical treatments or surgical options may be necessary to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
