What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), which is an important source of fuel for your body. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, where the body produces little or no insulin, in Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. This leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can cause various health complications if left unmanaged.

Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Obesity: Excess weight, especially around the abdomen, is a significant risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes.
Physical Inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance.
Poor Diet: Diets high in processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Genetics: Family history of diabetes can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
Age: The risk of Type 2 diabetes increases with age, especially after age 45.
Hormonal Changes: Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can increase risk factors.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Increased Thirst: Excessive thirst can be a sign of high blood sugar levels.
Frequent Urination: High blood sugar causes the kidneys to work harder, leading to increased urination.
Fatigue: Feeling tired or fatigued is common due to the body’s inability to use glucose effectively for energy.
Blurred Vision: High blood sugar levels can cause fluid to be pulled from the lenses of the eyes, leading to vision changes.
Slow Healing: Cuts and bruises may take longer to heal due to poor circulation and nerve damage.

Type 2 diabetes can be managed through lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and weight loss. In some cases, medication may be necessary to help control blood sugar levels. Early detection and proper management are crucial to prevent complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve damage.
