What is an Anal Fistula?

An anal fistula is a small tunnel-like structure that develops between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus. It usually arises from an abscess (a collection of pus) that has not healed properly. Anal fistula can cause discomfort, pain, and drainage and may become infected, leading to further complications.

Anal Abscess: Most anal fistula start from an abscess that forms due to infection.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Conditions like Crohn's disease can increase the risk of developing fistulas.

Trauma: Injury to the anal area from surgery, childbirth, or injury can lead to fistula formation.

Radiation Therapy: Treatment for cancer in the pelvic area can contribute to fistula development.

Infection: Certain infections, such as tuberculosis or sexually transmitted infections, can cause fistulas.

Chronic Constipation or Diarrhea: These conditions can put strain on the anal area, increasing the risk of fistulas.

Pain: Persistent pain or discomfort in the anal area, especially during bowel movements.

Drainage: Continuous drainage of pus or blood from the opening of the fistula.

Swelling: Swelling around the anus or formation of an abscess.

Itching: Itching or irritation in the anal region.

Fever: In some cases, fever may accompany the infection.

Anal fistula require medical treatment, which may include antibiotics, drainage of abscesses, or surgical intervention to repair the fistula. Proper treatment is essential to prevent complications and promote healing.
