What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that originates from the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It typically occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed, often due to a herniated disk, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. Sciatica can cause not only pain but also numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected leg.

Herniated Disks: Disks that cushion the vertebrae may bulge or rupture, pressing on the sciatic nerve.

Bone Spurs: Overgrowth of bone due to aging can narrow the spinal canal, leading to nerve compression.

Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can create pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located in the buttock, can irritate the sciatic nerve if it spasms.

Injury: Trauma or injury to the lower back can lead to inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve.

Other Conditions: Conditions such as tumors, infections, or inflammatory diseases can also cause sciatica.

Pain: Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the lower back down through the leg.

Numbness: Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot, often accompanying the pain.

Weakness: Muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.

Difficulty Moving: Challenges with moving the affected leg or standing up.

Pain Aggravation: Pain may worsen with prolonged sitting, standing, or sudden movements.

Managing sciatica often involves a combination of physical therapy, medications, and lifestyle changes. In severe cases, medical interventions such as injections or surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
